Which HVAC System Fits Your Project?
No single system suits every project. The choice depends on building use, cooling load, operating hours, available space, level of control, budget and maintenance needs.
Air Conditioning Systems: Types, Uses and How to Choose the Right System
A simple guide to help you understand common air conditioning systems and identify the most suitable one for your building before you decide.
Choosing an air conditioning system affects occupant comfort, electricity bills and maintenance costs over the life of the building. No single system suits every building: each system has its own load range, usage profile and installation requirements, and what suits a residential villa may not suit a warehouse or an office tower.
Which System Suits Your Building?
Apartment
concealed units or separate units, or a small VRF system where a single outdoor unit is preferred.
Villa
concealed units for each zone, or a VRF system for large villas that need independent control of many rooms.
Offices and hotels
usually VRF, with chilled water systems for larger buildings.
High-rise towers, hospitals and large complexes
chilled water systems, or connection to District Cooling networks where available.
Mosques, halls and exhibition spaces
central packaged or split air conditioning with a ductwork network.
Factories, warehouses and workshops
evaporative (desert) cooling in dry climates, or central air conditioning where precise temperature control is needed.
In all cases, the building needs a separate study of its ventilation and fresh air requirements.

| System | Maintenance Location | Noise Level | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|
|
Concealed AC
Suits villas, apartments, offices and hotel rooms. Hidden from view and relatively quiet, it needs a well-designed duct route and maintenance access openings. |
Indoor Ceiling | Ultra Quiet | 12 - 15 Years |
|
VRF / VRV Systems
Suits buildings with many zones and rooms. It offers independent control and efficient operation, but needs precise installation and high-quality pressure testing and insulation. |
Outdoor & Indoor | Extremely Quiet | 15 - 20 Years |
|
Packaged Rooftops
Suits commercial spaces and some large buildings. Easy to maintain, as the unit usually sits outside the indoor space. |
100% Roof Mounted | Low Noise | 15 - 18 Years |
|
Central Chilled Water Plant
Suits large projects such as towers, hotels, shopping centres and government buildings. Highly efficient with a long service life when designed and installed correctly. |
Outdoor & Indoor | Very Low | 25+ Years |
|
Evaporative Desert AC
Suits some industrial and service spaces that need continuous ventilation and fresh air. Whether it fits depends on the project and its operating conditions. |
External Evaporative Units | Moderate | 8 - 12 Years |
How to Choose the Right System
Climate Considerations in the Kingdom
Outdoor temperatures in many Saudi cities exceed 45°C in summer. Units must therefore be confirmed as suitable for operation in High Ambient conditions, and their actual capacity must be checked against local design conditions rather than standard conditions alone, as unit capacity can drop noticeably when outdoor temperatures rise. The effects of dust and direct sunlight on external equipment, and the difference in humidity between inland and coastal cities, must also be considered.
