The Distance Between Outdoor AC Units and Why It Affects Cooling Efficiency

Watch the Episode on Instagram

You may choose an AC unit with good specifications, then face weak cooling because of how it is installed. Among the details worth attention are the location of the outdoor unit, the spaces around it, and the direction in which the air leaves it.

When several units are grouped on the roof, arranging them becomes an important part of installation quality. Their layout must take into account air movement, maintenance requirements and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Why does the outdoor unit need space around it?

When the AC runs in cooling mode, the outdoor unit rejects the building’s heat to the surrounding air. It needs adequate airflow through its coil to perform this function correctly.

Therefore, installation guidelines emphasize providing clearance that allows air to move around and through the unit, according to the requirements of the model used.

What happens if a unit receives hot air from another unit?

When hot discharge air from one unit flows toward the air inlet of a neighboring unit, it may impair that unit’s proper operating conditions. A similar problem can occur if discharged air bounces off a nearby wall and returns to the same unit.

This condition is known as re-intake of discharge air, and it must be considered when determining the location and orientation of the units. Installation guides for condensing units call for avoiding the return of hot discharge air to the unit.

Therefore, it is not enough to ensure there is a gap between the units; it is also necessary to understand the air path when they operate.

What is the correct distance between outdoor units?

There is no single distance that suits all AC units.

The required distance varies by model, the direction of air intake and discharge, the presence of walls or obstructions, and the number of units and how they are arranged.

The installation manual may specify different clearances in front of the unit, behind it and on its sides, in addition to special requirements when several units are installed together. A suitable space must also be provided for access to parts that require maintenance.

Therefore, it is not valid to rely on a commonly quoted figure such as “half a meter” or “one meter” without reviewing the unit’s installation manual and applying the case that matches the site.

Is installing units back to back a mistake?

Not necessarily. Also, placing them in a single row does not automatically mean the layout is correct.

The judgment depends on the unit’s design, the locations of its air inlets and outlets, and the clearances specified in the installation manual. The arrangement must allow air movement and maintenance without conflicts between the units.

Mistakes to avoid when arranging units

  • Directing hot discharge air straight toward the air inlet of another unit.
  • Placing the unit too close to a wall without reviewing the required clearance.
  • Grouping units inside an area that traps hot air.
  • Installing a decorative screen that obstructs airflow or access for maintenance.
  • Setting distances by personal estimate without referring to the model’s manual.

It is best to review the unit layout plan before executing the bases and pipe routes, so that conflicts are addressed early.

Does failing to follow the clearances cancel the warranty?

This cannot be stated categorically in general. Warranty conditions vary, and a non-compliant installation may affect coverage of a fault linked to this violation, depending on the manufacturer’s or supplier’s terms and the result of the technical inspection.

To protect your rights, keep the installation manual, warranty documents, and testing and commissioning records, and make sure the work is executed in line with the approved requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Is increasing the distance between units always better?

The goal is to meet the airflow and maintenance requirements in accordance with the approved design, while taking into account pipe routes and the available space.

Can a unit be installed in front of a wall?

It can be done in cases permitted by the installation manual, while complying with the clearance, the airflow direction and the specified requirements.

Does poor cooling mean the unit layout is wrong?

Not necessarily. It is one of the matters to be checked within a diagnosis that covers the remaining system components and its operating conditions.
